Types of Dental Implants
Implants can replace from one to all of your teeth, depending on your situation. The three main types of dental implants include:

  • Single Tooth Implants: Replacing only one tooth requires a single dental implant. Your dentist implants the fixture into the bone beneath the missing tooth and, after successful integration, affixes a single prosthetic tooth.
  • Multiple Tooth Implants: Implants can replace several teeth at once using a porcelain dental bridge. Two dental implants on either side of the restoration support it and keep it in place inside of the mouth.
  • Implant-Supported Dentures: Patients missing all or most of their teeth benefit from implant-supported dentures. These permanent dentures do not require removal to clean or soak and function and look just like natural teeth. Dentures can help patients’ nutrition by making eating and chewing less difficult and their self-esteem by giving them back their smile and, in turn, control over their overall look.

Dental Implants in Durham, NC
Dental implants require that patients be in good health. Since the procedure requires oral surgery, the implant process uses general anesthetic, which patients should be able to undergo. A good candidate should have minimal bone atrophy at implant sites. If they do not, they may require a bone graft to replace and regrow the missing bone.

Caring For Your Implants
Caring for your implants simply requires a normal and strong at-home oral care routine. Patients should brush all areas of their teeth and oral tissues for at least two minutes twice daily. Flossing is also an important factor in keeping implants healthy. Flossing once daily removes plaque and bacteria between the teeth. See your dentist at least every six months for a regular dental examination and cleaning.
